So! This isn't really something huge that everyone has been debating but it definitely rubs me the wrong way. SENIORITIS= seniors don't want to do anything anymore and have lost all want to work in school.
Alright, it happens, yes, senioritis does hit! But then, the false statements of all the seniors last year screw us over! We definitely DO have work to do senior year and we CAN'T just cruze on by! If you have no academic classes then maybe, just maybeeeee you can see the real beauty of senioritis. This whole year I have been working my but off and complaining about it the whole way through because I am a senior and as a senior I am supposed to get less work than before! Tough luck! I've had same amount if not more work this year, than I had junior year, which is supposed to be the hardest year of high school. So seniors of last year, I'd like to tell you to stop telling lies because senior year is not just a cruze of fun, it requires work and time! Hopefully these last 16 some days of school will finally let me enjoy my senioritis.

Blogging around brahh
Moses Lin: Best of the Week: Prom.
I think this is completely, ridiculously awesome, I love that you got this idea from the do you mind questions because I as well have taken away more from them than I expected. It's nice to be asked questions that we usually would not be asked. Anyways, this idea is great and personal which is probably why it's weird that I'm commenting on it...but oh well. Great job Moses who knew two simple questions everyday in English would open so many doors!
Kayvon Vakil: Inconvenient Truth: "Land of the Free."
First of all... FISHIES! That made me interested in your blog, second I completely agree with you! This whole Land of the free is so not true. We are only free on the surface, to the public. When it really comes down to it, we can't do much at all! We can live and make decisions for ourselves but when it actually comes down to something important, we are as chained back as we could ever be. So yea man, I agree with your post! We definitely are not as free as we are said to be. [that rhymed]

Best of the week: TED presentations.
I spoke in my last entry about how interesting it is to see how differently people view the world; well the TED presentations are just another place where this can be seen.
Everybody chose a topic that was interesting to them that talking about something that would help sustain life from here on into the future... When choosing my topic I knew that I wanted to do something that would be interesting to me, so right away I went and looked at more artsy/computer things and found Siftables! At first I didn't know how they would help "sustain life," but after pondering about it for a while, I came up with a way.
This week my eyes were opened by how many different things people find interesting. There were presentations on things I would absolutely HATE to write about because it is just not for me... while for the people who were doing that project, that subject was interesting and enlightening.
We are all taught the same things in high school, but then, when it is finally our time to step out and do something with this knowledge, we all choose different paths. Maybe it's pre-destined that someone will work as a doctor, or maybe with computers or even with plants... or maybe we decide our fate by the environment we are surrounded by. Every person's story somehow imprints on their life. Finally out of high school, we get to get a glimpse at this imprint.

Mashup
Love itself is what is left over, when being in love has burned away...
1. "You are so young, so much before all beginning, and I would like to beg you, dear Sir, as well as I can, to have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language."
1. "You are so young, so much before all beginning, and I would like to beg you, dear Sir, as well as I can, to have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language."
2. "Things and animals- and our enjoyment of it is so indescribably beautiful and rich only because it is full of inherited memories of the engendering and birthing of millions. In one creative thought a thousand forgotten nights of love come to life again and fill it with majesty and exaltation. And those who come together in the nights and are entwined in rocking delight perform a solemn task and gather sweetness, depth, and strength for the song of some future poet, who will appear in order to say ecstasies that are unsayable."
3."For it is only habit and memory that dulls the physical passion. Without memory, each night is the first night, each morning is the first morning, each kiss and touch are the first."
4. "When you fall in love, it is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake, and then it subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots are become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the desire to mate every second of the day. It is not lying awake at night imagining that he is kissing every part of your body. No... don't blush. I am telling you some truths. For that is just being in love; which any of us can convince ourselves we are."
6. "It is also good to love: Because love is difficult. For one human being to love another human being: that is perhaps the most difficult task that has been entrusted to us, the ultimate task, the final test and proof, the work for which all other work is merely preparation. That is why young people, who are beginners in everything, are not yet capable of love: it is something they must learn. With their whole being, with all their forces, gathered around their solitary, anxious, upward- beating heart, they must learn to love."
7. "But learning-time is always a long, secluded time, and therefore loving, for a long time ahead and far on into life, is-; solitude, a heightened and deepened kind of aloneness for the person who loves."
8. "Love your solitude and try to sing out with the pain it causes you."
9. You don't need to watch the whole thing. The first 2 mins are enough.
10. "We are solitary. We can delude ourselves about this and act as if it were not true. That is all. But how much better it is to recognize that we are alone; yes, even to begin from this realization. It will, of course, make us dizzy; for all points that our eyes used to rest on are taken away from us, there is no longer anything near us, and everything far away is infinitely far."
11. "Loving does not at first mean merging, surrendering, and uniting with another person (for what would a union be of two people who are unclarified, unfinished, and still incoherent-?), it is a high inducement for the individual to ripen, to become something in himself, to become world, to become world in himself for the sake of another person; it is a great, demanding claim on him, something that chooses him and calls him to vast distances."
12. "But this is what young people are so often and so disastrously wrong in doing: they (who by their very nature are impatient) fling themselves at each other when love takes hold of them, they scatter themselves, just as they are, in all their messiness, disorder, bewilderment...: and what can happen then? What can life do with this heap of half-broken things that they call their communion and that they would like to call their happiness, if that were possible, and their future? And so each of them loses himself for the sake of the other person, and loses the other, and many other who still wanted to come."
13. "By about 4 AM he had decided he was in love with me. Which, though a little strange, since I’d barely spoken, was fine with me. It’s always nice when someone’s in love with you. Gives you leverage."
15. "It is true that many young people who love falsely, i.e., simply surrendering themselves and giving up their solitude (the average person will of course always go on doing that-), feel oppressed by their failure and want to make the situation they have landed in livable and fruitful in their own, personal way-."
16. "You can never know if a person forgives you when you wrong them. Therefore it is existentially important to you. It is a question you are intensely concerned with. Neither can you know whether a person loves you. It’s something you just have to believe or hope. But these things are more important to you than the fact that the sum of the angles in a triangle is 180 degrees. You don't think about the law of cause and effect or about modes of perception when you are in the middle of your first kiss."
17. "Is it possible for a person to love without wanting love back? Is anything so pure? Or is love, by its nature, a reciprocity, like oceans and clouds, an evaporating of seawater and a replenishing by rain?"

Best of the week: Do You Mind?
When Mr. Allen first introduced Do you mind? I was intrigued and that it was a very interesting thing to do. We get to answer two questions every day that we usually don't get to answer or think about. Answering the questions was only part of the beauty; the real thing that caught my eye was how people answered those questions.
Everyone sees the world in different ways and we often don't realize this. There is a psychology approach that talks about this. The Phenomenological Approach. Even though this is a very long and complicated approach name, all it really means is that people see the world in different ways.
Through answering the same questions and then talking about our answers, I noticed how very true this is. People would answer the question in ways I would never even think of.
People experience things in very different ways than us that is why we are not able to just assume that what and how we see things is the right way. It might be the right way for us, but the completely wrong way for someone else... this is what makes the world so interesting and every person so unique. People find beauty in the randomest things for the most random reasons. This is the whole reason there is so much creativity and uniqueness in the world. It's Awesome!

Blogging around
From Me to Debra's Entry of Captured Thought: Free Will.
Your entry made me wish I was in that class, it seems like a very interesting one. I also wish to believe that we have free will but I think that our free will is very limited. Past our simple choices like "to go to the bathroom or eat some food," everything is influenced by something else. We choose to do something but past that someone influences us to make the decisions we end up making.
I feel that "freedom" is just a word. In reality we are far from free. Every action that actually matters is somehow limited. The bill of rights are even limited when they actually matter.
I feel that even in classes where we are supposed to have the freedom to say anything we want, we are limited by the teacher and their opinion. Many teachers shut down our opinions because they think that there's is more important.
A Response to Lizzie's Metacognition: First Semester.
I took humanities for the opposite reason than you did but I definitely agree that it opened up my creativity as well. I admire your want to take a more difficult class for you to explore the other part of your brain that you usually don't use, for me, I use my creative brain all the time but in the end of junior year and the summer I had a lot of trouble with creativity and coming up with my own ideas; this class opened up my mind and let me create new things instead of just taking from others.
I agree with you that the Mindbook was probably the best part of the class. It opened up my mind and let me explore assignments completely lacking in boundaries. That helped my mind the most.
I just wish the class was as easy going as it is now, the whole year, instead of being so tight-knit and 50 projects at once.

Final Blog for Lit. Circles
For the literature circles books I read the novel Thinking in Pictures: My life with Autism. By Temple Grandin.
For this final blog I reviewed and compared my book to The Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks from Haley Mooney's blog entry. Both books talk about challenging the status quo with oppression. In Temple's book she talks about how autistic people get oppressed in life and the disabled get pushed aside because they are thought of as incomplete. Many people see it as easier just to label disabled people and not worry about maybe they actually have something to offer. No one spend the time to figure out what their strengths are; Temple Grandin is able to see images in her head that no other "normal" human can see and yet she also at first was just labeled like everyone else. Henrietta had a similar story but she was not labeled purely by who she was, this played a role but really the problem with her was that no one ever tried digging to the bottom of who she was and what her real story was.
People in this society find it much easier to just go along with the rest of the crowd than spend time actually trying to find out the truth. Haley sums this up well in her blog saying that "people are afraid of change and therefore when "signs" show that something may not go so well, the idea is quickly dropped and moved on from." This is what happens with autistic people too. No one wants to spend the time to actually find their strength and work with it, that is why it is hard for them to get past basic level job work. Yet if one was to actually spend the time to find their strengths and utilize them in the future, for education and job preference (like Temple did) they would flourish and be able to accomplish much more than then the average person.
Society needs to stop being lazy and get around just normal stereotypes, there are deep secrets that are hidden in things we choose to ignore, all we need to do is actually spend the time looking in them. They could help up solve our biggest problems.

Lit. Circle Response #3
Thinking in Pictures: Life with Autism. Temple Grandin.
Meeting #3. 123-184.
Summary:
In this section Grandin talks about the medication associated with autism. She talks about the new methods as well as the old. Afterwards she goes on to talk about autism and relationships and how autistic people see relationships in physical ways better than in mental ways. Then she goes into connecting with cows and how it helped her with her work; she was able to see things through the cows eyes and because of that she was able to accomplish more.
“One should not always be a watcher- the cold impersonal observer- but instead should participate” (Grandin, 153).
This is a quote from Temple; she talks about how autistic people often don't get involved but really should; people without autism are no different. There are always children that stay far away and just observe because they aren't courageous enough to participate. Children need to understand that they can not always be observers- they need to take part in things and become involved. Becoming involved is scary but it widens a person's horizons and lets one experience more than they ever could by just being an observer. Autistic children are often thought to be so different from normal children but they really aren't; they have the same problems that normal children do, like not fitting in and not being accepted, again as Temple says, one just has to step out and try something new and that problem is gone.

Captured Thought: Post-modern art
I never understood why people enjoyed a dot on a white canvas and why that was called art. After spending weeks learning about modern vs. post-modern art I finally realized why people liked this art. It is the only next step.
Artists have already shown everything that is visibly seen; now they have to dig deeper and show what we can't see with our eyes. Because we can't see these things with our eyes, people have the freedom to explore any type of image. Someone's personality can be represented by a black canvas or by millions of crazy colored paint splatters. There is no limit on that which we can not see.
Modern art is hard to accept for me, but knowing where it comes from definitely helps. It opens up doors to things that are otherwise impossible to represent. A persons feelings, personality, anything really.
Some modern art seems very simple as well but when you dig into it: not everyone can come up with a certain way of arranging colors and making it represent a certain feeling or emotion.
I will stay loyal to super photorealistic art as my choice of favorite, but i definitely understand now why many like modern art; it opens up a door that was previously closed shut.

Connection: Dreams and Einstein's dreams
Einstein's dreams, the novel, talks about different dreams that have a running theme through all of them. This theme is: time. If one reads each chapter separately, they really don't make much sense, nor do they when read together. The only thing that ties them all together is time and the way that each speaks of time.
My dreams often have a running theme through out them as well. They are colorful and random, super vivid, and more real than life but the thing that ties them all together is that they let me explore my hidden secrets. Things that I try to avoid in real life, come out in my dreams.
Some times having your secrets revealed in your dreams can be a good thing and some times they are too hard to face. If I am struggling with friends or enemies, I often have dreams that I am running away from something.
Couple of years back, I had the most vivid dream of me running away from my two enemies. They had guns and I didn't. It was snowy all over and there was one path that I could run on. I ran and ran and found some card board that I decided to hide under. As I'm sitting there, breathing like a long time smoker, one of my enemies runs up and points the gun at my forehead. In the blink of an eye she had shot me and next thing I know: I am laying in my bed, scared to open my eyes because I think that all I will see is white nothingness... in my mind, that was heaven. Finally I open my eyes only to be releaved to see my room in perfect silence and peace around me.
These dreams are hard to face, but after I do, normal life becomes much easier.
People who I don't want to think about come up in my dreams in ways that I want to see them, or the way that they are that I am trying to pretend is false.
Overall, just like in Einstein's dreams, my theme of facing hidden thoughts in my dreams is a very broad theme, just like time is in this novel. It leaves room for much imagination and makes me want to sleep forever just to see what my mind can create.
Dreams really are fascinating and it is a shame we can't always remember them.

Metacognition: First semester
This semester definitely did not turn Out how I thought it would. Shadow catcher taught me to pay more attention to languAge in books and I started to pay more attention to the double story lines. Sophie's world was the first book I ever read that was philosophy for teenagers and it let me remember much more information than I would from a normal class.
The videos that we watvhed were very random but all interesting in there own way. I learned much more than I thought I would this semester.

Metacognition- Get organized
I decided that for my organizing project I was going to clean my room. I have had piles of clothes lying all around my room and everything has been in a complete jumble. I had been having problems finding things for the past week as well so it seems like the right thing to organize.
Before I started I definitely was not excited. Having to get up and actually do something seems so annoying and tiresome. Once I finally got up and got into cleaning everything seemed to come much faster. After a while it actually became kind of fun. I shut myself in my room and cleaned everything. Sometimes i even found interesting things, like an old collection of clay dolls I made when I was little.
Once I had finished I felt very accomplished. I mean, cleaning a room is a pretty big deal!
My head felt much better, as if I had organized it instead of my room. Everything now had a place and I knew where that place was, felt good.
Cleaning my room is always the last thing on my list but now I know that as much of a hassle as it is- it does help. It cleans up your head and makes it easier to think. The amount of clutter in my room had affects how my head was, now that everything was organized in my room- everything seemed organized in my head as well. It also lets you think during the process of cleaning. I came up with lots of good ideas while cleaning- sadly I no longer remember them but at the time, they were very good.
Definitely will make cleaning my room a weekly event.

Change of mind: Living forever
Never ending life always seems to be desirable, something that we want but can never reach.. Now people are saying that it possibly is not impossible.. maybe we can live forever.. so now we think. Would it work? Would we want to?
I always thought I would want my family and I to live forever. Never having to face the sad reality of losing those you love but now I keep thinking about it and it does not seem as appealing anymore.
I think that there is only so much that can be done in your life and that there is a point where you complete everything you wanted to and then pass. Having no choice to die, having to stay alive forever even after you completed what you wanted will get old. I would not want that to happen so therefore I would rather set the age I live to. Not eternal life, just as long as I need to complete what I wanted.
Another problem I thought about when thinking about eternal life was- where would we find all the space to sustain everyone? The population would only grow therefore meaning that we would need more supplies and more area to sustain everybody.
Eternal life seems as a good idea when just thinking about a couple of people; once you start looking at everybody who will want to live- you only see that soon enough there wont be much room for anyone, causing us to have to move to other planets.
I don't know the answer to the question "do you want to live forever" because there are reasons I want to and others that make me think I don't. Before life is eternal there need to be ground rules set up.

Captured Thought: Change is not possible
Recently I have been having trouble with my boyfriend... actually we broke up. So this made me think about men and if they are even capable of change. Through long processing and hours of thought I have decided that they are, but trying to change someone in high school, especially a boy, is crazy talk. It is impossible.
This is one of those "Now I get it!" moments. I spent hours sitting and wondering why things couldn't be perfect and now I realize why.
Even though they were tiny changes, I tried to change him in high school and when you think about that from the other person's point of view, it makes sense why they would get angered. Some random person comes into your life and thinks that they know how to run your life better than you do, obviously you are going to get angered because you think that you know yourself better than anyone.
My intentions were good, I only wanted things for the better but he was happy with his life even though he wasn't going anywhere with it.
Changes need to be subconscious. Like with a child. Children learn through watching their parent's behaviours; if their parents say please and thank you, then the child will put that into their subconscious and say those things as well, without even noticing.
You can't tell a person, do this or don't do this- you need to show them through action that doing this, pays off in the end. I showed him that doing your work and striving to do well does pay off in the end and he took that in and now does it for himself. Yet whenever I tried to tell him something, a wall was put up as if I was a parent trying to control him.
I've seen people change. My dad for example. Through years of being with my mom, he changed from being very impatient and bad tempered to having a very good temper and being very charitable. This happens through lots of time and effort and can not be done in one day.
In high school we try to do things as fast as possible, get things done so we can go out and play. Not all things in this world are like that and relationships are one of those things you can't fly through. A relationship needs time and energy but also needs space. Through the "I miss you" process, people start to listen to each other more and get closer to each other on a deeper level.
That right there was my "Now I get it!" moment, well, at least that was about 2% of it. :]

Connection: Sophie and kids today
In the novel Sophie's world, the author has two stories going on at the same time. One is the philosophy and just how philosophers developed, whereas the other story is of Sophie, a fourteen year old girl who is just learning about this all.
Sophie connects to us, she shows how blind we turn and how we reach a point in our lives where we can either lose all interest in the world, or go farther into trying to figure out what everything is about.
By having the second story of Sophie weave into the philosophy the author shows the relevance of philosophy to normal kids.
Most people think that philosophy is pointless and should just be left alone, "life is the way it is because it is this way" and that is how people like it. They do not want to spend their time trying to figure out why everything is the way it is.
By showing that even someone like us, Sophie, can have such a connected to something so "forgotten," shows us that maybe it is not as forgotten as we thought.
By looking at teenagers today the author probably found out how he should make Sophie.
First she was very curious yet resilient as to why philosophy? And why all these stupid questions? But as she started to look into what the author kept sending her, she started to apply it to her life. Soon, philosophy was the first thing on her mind. This is how we work, show us something new, make us interested and it will be the main thing we think about!
Overall, Sophie makes the novel much more relatable to kids like us. She makes something we think is so far away from us, philosophy, seem relevant and relatable.

iMedia: Photo realistic Portraits, Alyssa Monks
Throughout my whole painting and art career photo realism has been my goal. These paintings absolute amaze me. The ability to recreate a photo from scratch in such detail that people question which is the actual photo, fascinates me. Before writing this blog I went searching for photo realistic art and found this artist. Alyssa Monks. In about five seconds, I fell in love. Her art is so realistic, every single highlight is correcting placed. Every pore on a persons skin. These are only three of her works, but they continue.
Look at them, they're pretty remarkable.
Being able to make such work takes lots of practice and years of failure. I am still an am-mature, yet I hope to one day be able to create huge pieces that people question. I want to hear people walk by and say, "Is that a photograph?!" and then be astounded when they walk up close and see the brush strokes.
Oil realism is only one type of art that is able to be recreated like a photo. There are many others, you just have to sit down and search.
Bic Ball-point pen
Scratch board and ink
Colored Pencil
P.s. After writing this I went and searched more to find photos of other types of realistic art and found that Alyssa Monks was the artist that shocked me so much at Art Chicago. Last year on a field trip we went to art Chicago and there was a painting, huge, took up the whole wall and I stood, mouth wide open and couldn't believe my eyes that it was really oil paint. This was it.

Carry it forward: Shadow Catcher
The novel, Shadow Catcher, carried the belief of Complexity throughout the novel. This made me think about the complexity in our 21st century lives which also connected to our sculpture project. We never really realize how complex our lives really are, and why they are so. The book made me think about why our lives are so complex. I came up with a list
- School, which includes class work, homework, and supplementary projects
- Work, takes time away from school work making that take much longer
- Art, also part of school but is always put into last place, taking the only free time I have left
- Parents, they need attention too and when we are parents we will crave that attention as well
- Boyfriend, and friends all crave attention. Yet, going out with them is partially for us as well because we we were not able to do so we would go crazy.
These are the major things that fill my life and i often get caught up in all these things. After reading Shadow Catcher and understanding that I am not the only super complex being out there, I've got a plan.
I'm, going to try and plan my day a little better. Setting time aside so that I will able to give time to my parents, boy friend and friends, and still have some time for myself.
My trusty assignment notebook will finally be used!
Overall, realizing why our lives are as complex as they are and seeing that we are not the only crazy ones in this world; definitely eases the soul. I will carry this new found idea into the future by planning more and trying to rid myself of at least a little complexity. Slow my hectic life down a little, oh! and, SLEEP!

Metacognition: QE Essay
Throughout the time I spent writing this essay, I noticed my usual thinking process come into my head. I started to use my usual metaphors and type all at one time. This time, it didn't fail me. My metaphors kept flowing in and they created a much more interesting read.
Even though the metaphors helped, I think the thing that was best about my essay was the paragraph about my painting. It definitely related only to me and set a voice of individuality to the essay. I struggled throughout the whole essay to try to make my "from my voice" and in that paragraph I felt that I succeeded the most. Not even was I able to illustrate the situation from a linguistic point of view, but I was also able to visually show what I was talking about by adding a picture.
Overall I think the essay turned out as a success, only thing I struggled most with was transitions. For some reason my brain likes to come up with metaphors yet when it comes to transitioning from one paragraph to the other- it reaches a blank. Poor brain, hitting its head against the wall. I think even looking through transitions that people use will help, yet sitting down and looking at those is going to be hard. Procrastination! Gets us teenagers every time. I will try to sit down and search the internet for some good transitions to wow you in my new essay.

Blogging Around
Garret B- Metacognition-Blog
I find it really interesting the way you wrote this blog. You definitely didn't stick to the generic student, you can hear your voice in all this and we can see your view on the subject of blogs. I agree with you that this is just a blog and you can take it any way you want, definitely a lot of what we do is like that and so therefore its hard to grade. Dude, keep it up, you write really well. Stick is to the man! haha
Desiree G- Change in mind- Keith Haring
Being into art myself I think its awesome how different people look at the same thing. You see so much movement in his work when I see just colors and patterns. Both of us look at art in appreciation but we appreciate different things. It's awesome to read about your view and contrast it to mine.

Metacognition: QE Essay
Throughout all of the essays I have written I have always noticed that I write better when it's in one sitting. I get all of my thought out right away and then edit them later. Most times I don't even need to edit. The thoughts are down the way they're supposed to, only thing is that I forget spelling and grammar.
Spelling and Grammar have always been my mistakes. When writing free hand- I am very good at spelling; when it comes to computers, the keys get all jumbled up and I forget to fix typing mistakes.
Another mistake that comes with typing in one sitting is awkward grammar. When continuously typing I start to just put down my thoughts, which are often jumbled and weirdly written. That is why, I can understand them yet others can not.
I've always been amazed with being able to write well with out trying. English is not my first language yet for some strange reason, it flows well for me. I am able to write down what I am thinking in interesting ways and make them memorable. Another thing I've been gifted with is writing titles! Titles have always been my favorite, being able to catch people by just a few words always intrigued me to write better titles. Hopefully you will see some of them throughout this year!
